Description
From large shrub to small tree, the spiny retama is usually 12 - 15 ft. but can grow to 30 ft. It has green bark and fern like leaves. Small leaflets extend from two long leaf stalks 15 in. long. The leaflets fall off during the summer leaving the leaf stalks to function as leaves.
Retamas bloom from April through August with 5 petal yellow flowers with one of the petals turning red as the bloom ages and having a honey gland at it's base. It prefers full sun and grows well in poor soil.
